Surging Savage?

I'm geting used to my Savage and so far it's been great. I do have a question:

1. I changed the oil and air filter. After changing the air filter it seems to be a lot more jerky when it's first started. Today for example, it was surging so bad that I had to run it on choke for a few minutes (While riding). This was done after a warm up period. While on choke, it was great. (I only left the choke on briefly...under 1 minute) Once the bike has warmed up, approx. 5-10 minutes, the bike is fine. The old air filter wasn't really dirty, but gray in color. I used a new Suzuki OEM filter. (I did not spray the filter but used it as is..) The manner in which I was instructed to start the bike was to pull the choke, start to bike, and let it warm up. When the engine sounds like it's about to die, switch the choke off. Since I purchased a used Savage, without a manual, I'm wondering if this is true. The bike has never failed to start, nor has it ever cut off while riding. Is this normal for the Savage?

Thanks in advance for all replies.
